Lipstick on the Pig

pig

How’s about a kiss, sweetie?

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You can even give it a bath and put a bow around it, but when you hold it down its still gonna squeal.

I’m going to start calling it “Nobamacare” for all those people who’ve lost their coverage. This post isn’t really about that. It’s more about what they’re saying about it.

So, regarding good old Nobamacare, Nancy Pelosi comes out the other day and says “A belt and suspenders, the President’s going to put on one, we’re going to put on the other, and everything will be under control.”

No, Nancy, it will not be under control. It won’t even be sort-of not messed up. It’s a long way from being anything but the proverbial train wreck. I would ask how she could say such a thing, but…we all know better.

So, Obama comes out with a stumbling, ambling press conference, that amounted to “this is broken and we’re trying to fix it but it doesn’t look good.” The President actually said “The Federal Government’s doesn’t procure technology well.” Unbelievable.  After all this time, it was hard for me to believe he said that. As if it’s part of the reason. I could see some low-level bureaucrat offering this gem up, but not the President of the United States.  After all this time, you would think someone would tell our supposedly well-spoken president, “ Well of all the things you could say, don’t say….that.” It’s just insulting. Did you not think of this three years ago? Here are some direct quotes from the President’s press conference.

The truth is that this is, number 1, very complicated. The website is doing a lot of stuff.

There’s a bunch of pieces to it that made  it challenging.

Really, he said this.

Combine that with the fact that the Federal Government does a lot of things well, one of the things it does not do well is information technology procurement. This is kind of a systematic problem across the board. It is not surprising, then, that there were going to be some problems.

Well, see, sir, your office is referred to as the “Chief Executive.” So, this is kind of your baby.

We have to ask ourselves some hard questions inside the White House as opposed to why we didn’t see more of these problems coming, earlier on,  a: so we could set expectations, b: so that we could look for different ways for people to end up applying.

Might have wanted to ask yourselves some hard questions a long time ago.

In terms of what happens on November 30 or December 1, it’s fair to say that the improvement will be marked and noticeable. The website will work much better on November 30 certainly than it worked on October 1st , that’s pretty low bar, it will be working a lot better than it was last week, it will be working better than it is this week. Which means that the majority of people that go to the website will see a website that is working the way it’s supposed to.

Huh…?

I think it is not possible for me to guarantee, that 100% of the people 100% of the time going on this website will have a perfectly seem less smooth experience.

I’m reminded of Paul Rudd’s character in Anchorman, when he puts on the cologne ‘Sex Panther’ and says “Sixty percent of the time, it works all the time.”

Wow, yes, these are things our articulate, super-smart, President said about an aspect of something he’s staked his presidency on.

It feels like I’m watching a movie, where the leaders are insane but people don’t really believe it. Its similar to some theories of cognitive dissonance. Which means we see something that our mind doesn’t quite comprehend, that’s in conflict with our beliefs, and we try to resolve the equation, relieve the mental discomfort, try to regain our sense of normalcy. Like “They can’t really be that insane, can they? No, they just couldn’t be.”

Back to Nancy. I think she must be bordering on getting on the “Biden Rules” list. You know, not allowed to speak to the press,  please don’t comment on anything important, stay in the office and enjoy another gin and tonic. That kind of thing.

Because Nancy thinks we can fix the “Bill that we must pass so that we can know what’s in it” with a belt and suspenders.

Not going to be that easy Nancy. You can put lipstick on a….on yeah, I already said that.

All right, try this… if you like your pig, you can keep your pig.

Episode 19a: Bachmann, Barry-cades, and Burning Skies:

Harry Reid vs. the Anarchists

anarchists

Those damn anarchists

So, Harry Reid called members of the Tea Party “Tea Party Anarchists”  and said, “Obamacare has been the law for four years. Why don’t they get a life and talk about something else?”

Harry, are you talking about the bill that your colleague said “we have to pass so we can know what’s in it?”

Are you talking about the bill in which this administration has missed half of its own legally imposed implementation deadlines?

Are you talking about the bill that, according to a Rasmussen poll, 50% of the people disagree with and oppose the individual mandate? You mean that bill?

Please tell me you’re not talking about that bill, because if you are, anyone that picks up a newspaper would think you’re an idiot.

In his speech, he talked about the middle class “turning on the news to see elected officials playing silly games.”  Yes Harry, you’re talking about yourself.  He went on to say that the “Tea Party anarchists” basically “don’t represent anyone, but have the ability to stop us from doing anything.” If they’re so insignificant how could that be?

Harry Reid is the senior U.S. Senator from Nevada. He has been the Senate majority leader since January 2007. Previously he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. So here’s a lesson, Harry, those Tea Party Anarchists are engaging in a process called Democracy. Apparently, you only bitch about it when it doesn’t work in your favor. That’s not nice, Harry.

And, if you are unable to get anything done, perhaps it’s because you’re bad at your job. Or, perhaps it’s because you continue to support a piece of bad legislation strictly on party lines, without regard for the people you say you represent.

There are a lot of things that give me faith in America. The fact that Harry Reid keeps getting re-elected isn’t one of them.

Do us a favor and retire Harry. Maybe you could get your friend Nancy to retire and you two could hang out. Whatever, just get of the way. Get some sun for goodness sake. Cause, damn, dude.

harry-reid-evil-mongers

Retire Harry. Take it easy. Get a makeover for goodness sake.

Senator Ted Cruz: Winning the battles may cost him the war.

So the fight against Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, has shifted into a new gear.

Senator Ted Cruz Speaks At The Heritage Action Defund Obamacare Town Hall

Senator Ted Cruz Speaks At The Heritage Action Defund Obamacare Town Hall

Senator Ted Cruz from Texas is the new face of Defund Obamacare and he has put a charge into the movement.  To most it appears he may be the best chance to defund Obamacare once and for all. He’s been on a summer long nationwide tour to rally the American people to his argument.  And he’s been winning.

Now it looks as if his efforts have arrived at the precipice. The House of Representative have again voted to defund the ACA.  42 votes so far, but number 42 is different.  This time the ACA was tied to the budget.  The bill was worded in such a way that allowed Republicans to vote to defund the ACA while approving the continuing resolution to keep the government running.

This means R’s can defund the ACA and not take the blame for shutting down the government.  Or so they think.

The bill is now in the Senate and Cruz is on the floor as I type, (3:13pm est) speaking to an empty senate chamber.  The cloture vote is Wednesday; meaning the vote to end discussion on the bill.  Cruz is attempting a filibuster to delay the cloture vote in the Democratically controlled chamber. Procedure is not on his side.  A lot of Republicans are not on his side.  Hence the empty chamber right now as Cruz makes his last ditch effort to sway his party to unite over the defunding of the ACA and block the vote at the same time.

Cruz claims he will speak until he’s no longer able to stand.   Mike Lee, Republican Senator for Utah has interrupted for a very long question.  In fact Lee’s question is going on 10 minutes now. Lee is a co-sponsor of the summer long defund tour.  This filibuster appears to be a tag team effort.  God I love C-Span.

Cruz believes his cause is righteous and his methods are just.

Here is why he is wrong.

If Ted Cruz succeeds in blocking the vote, or swaying enough Ds to his cause to win the vote outright, he’ll win his battle.  And then he’ll promptly lose the war.

The President will veto the bill and the government will shut down. Obama will blame the Republicans and Ted Cruz for playing games with the budget. In fact getting the House Republicans to tie the budget resolution to the ACA has already set the Republicans up to take the blame for the government shut down.

Guess what?

The Republicans will get blamed for the shut down. Facts will not matter.  They will be blamed for crucial agencies shutting down.  They will get blamed for Social Security checks not going out.  Yeah, they still send paper checks in the mail if that was your next question.

A lot of Republicans believe likewise and are worried about Cruz.  Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate Minority Leader is urging Cruz to step back and has said tying the ACA to the continuing budget resolution to the ACA was a bad idea. More telling, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, has said the same as Mitch McConnell.

So what?  Big deal if R’s take the hit for the shut down.  Well the only way to truly get rid of Obamacare is to win the White-house, change the numbers in the Senate, win elections.  It’s the only way.

The make up of the current House and Senate leave no procedural options available to get rid of the bill.  And believe me the bill needs to be gotten rid of.  It’s a giant bucket of bad. So blaming R’s for shutting government down will impede Republican efforts to win elections.  At least that’s what McConnell and other establishment Repubs say.  I’ve heard some hard core conservative pundits say the same.

Mike Lee’s “question” for Cruz is approaching 15 minutes.

One gentleman on Fox said the ACA is already being defeated just by it’s implementation. He’s right.  The bill is so badly written and has been so badly executed, so many deadlines have been missed, so many exemptions have been granted, so many companies have eliminated 40hr employees to avoid penalties under Obamacare.  By 2016 any Republican candidate for President need only hammer home how his opponent supported Obamacare and the election might very well be theirs. So shutting down the government might derail gains made against Obamacare.

What are Democrats saying?  Nothing.  They are on the sideline as Tea Party members of the Senate battle the establishment of the Republican Party in the Senate.  Why should they speak? Republicans are once again loading the gun in a effort to blow off their own feet as we approach mid-term elections.

Mike Lee, in his now 18 minute question just said, “A law has become less, and less popular as time has gone on.. and less and less something the American people support.” The look on his face and the halt in his voice clearly show he just realized he made McConnell and Cornyn’s case for NOT filibustering, for not tying the budget resolution to the defund Obamacare bill.

In other words Lee just laid out why Cruz should just shut up, let the bill do it’s damage, and let the Rs go out and win some elections beating Ds over the head with it.  But now it seems Republicans will have to get over their civl war and answer for why they shut the government down.  That was not Lee’s intention.

The Republicans have been here before.  In 1996 President Clinton vetoed a budget bill that triggered a government shut down.

Republicans, led by the Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, tried to lay the blame rightly on the White House doorstep.

Ask current CNN talk show host Newt Gingrich how that worked out.

Hush Ted, Hush.

Obamacare: I was for it before I was against it.

imagesLet me start out by saying I am completely in favor of socialized medicine.  I believe this is the greatest nation on the earth and as such we should be able to provide healthcare to everybody in it. The country that is not the earth, although that would be grand.  I’m completely baffled by people who spend their energy boasting, sometimes angrily, about the greatness of this country and yet think the country is unable to do such a great thing.  What’s the point of being great?  I’ll guess we’ll now debate what a great thing is.  The other baffler is why would the greatest nation in the world providing healthcare for every one of it’s citizens be such a bad thing?

Lesser nations do it.  Canada, Australia, Great Britain, all provide healthcare to the entirety of its populace.  Canada and Australia largely escaped the recession too.  Their healthcare systems didn’t tank or cause their financial system to tank.  And yeah, I said it, those are lesser nations.

Anyway, I’m all for universal, socialized, communist health care.  The problem is Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act is not socialized healthcare.  It really isn’t health care at all.  It has ultimately become a gateway for insurance companies to raise rates, even though they don’t have to.  Folks, again you’ve been tricked by the media, right and left wing branches.  Once again they’ve dangled a squirrel and we have gleefully taken the distraction bait.  The villains here are the insurance companies.  They have no need to raise the rates but they can under the guise of Obamacare. The law is the problem no doubt, the hen house door left unlocked as it were.  The insurance companies are the all too willing foxes.  The fox doesn’t need to go into the hen house. It’s a wild animal and preys on other wild animals.  But the hen house is easy money.  Unlocked, it’s defenseless.  It requires no investment and comes with a huge payoff.  The gift that keeps on giving.

The farmer charged with protecting the hen house is the guy who left the lock off. And he did it on purpose.

For those struggling to keep up with my labored analogy, the President is the farmer in this scenario.

President Obama wrote a great law and then in order to get it through the Congress and create some mythical legacy he allowed it to be watered down into this abomination called the Affordable Care Act.  He then spent every nickel of his political capitol pushing it through.  What came out the other end of the sausage grinder was not fit for human consumption, literally.  The original was a law that went from single payer with a government option that would have actually covered every American, to this bizarre law that is so f*&^ed up it’s been rolled out in pieces and most of it has been delayed.  It’s a bill that is causing the layoff of workers and the cutting back of full time employees to part-time.  This cut back was predicted by the conservatives and poo pooed by the liberals.

Well I’m a liberal, hence my belief in healthcare for all, and I can tell you the cutting back of full time workers to part-timers is so vast and so deep some economists believe the 40 hour work week may be a memory in 5 – 10 years.  Gang, that is light speed in politics and public policy.

Hey O, what's a matta, you law no work?

Hey Mr Pres, what’s a matta, you law no work?

So as another big hunk of the ACA gets held up, coincidentally, the part that would regulate insurance prices, the apologizers and deniers have gone on the offensive.  That would of course be the Democrats who defended this law.  They have to, I mean since they’re the dopes who mangled it to the current garbage we have now.

Still, the apologies and denials are, well to overuse a word, baffling.

Congresswoman and Democratic Party Chair Debi Wasserman Shultz (D) FL, went on the Sunday talk shows to say this is what they had expected all along and it’s not news.  Really Debi, so just another made up scandal is it?  Even my son Frank, pictured above left, knows that’s a load of bulls#*t.

Then the MSNBC crew fired up their Klingon cloaking device in a vain attempt to cover for the President.

Karen Finney, host of Disrupt on MSNBC weekends, said with a straight face that the President had already told us the bill would be rolled out in parts and some things may take time to iron out.  Two things here Karen: 1. No he didn’t and 2. that’s not how laws work.  Once voted on by congress and signed by the President they are considered law. Implementation date may be pushed to the start of the next calendar year or even the next fiscal year, which for government agencies is usually Oct 1st.  You certainly can’t brake a law up by saying, well we’re not sure how to implement this so forget it for another year, or my favorite, we can’t afford this part yet so 2015 looks good.  You can catch the genius known as Ms Finney on MSNBC between To Catch a Predator and Locked Up marathons.

Union presidents have gone on the Sunday shows to complain that they are finding out they won’t be able to keep the insurance they have.  Still the liberals say it’s all bluster, all to scare the American people against the first black president.  Mika, a co-host on Morning Joe (also MSNBC) all but said those exact words.  In case you were wondering, the unions backed Obama and the democrats in 08 and 2012 and are traditionally liberal.

The cake topper was the early afternoon weekday show on MSNBC.  I’m not even sure of the name or the host, but they had the republican congressman from Oklahoma’s 5th district, James Lankford.  The panel was debating scare tactics being used by republicans in regards to ACA.  You know stuff like layoffs, hours being cut etc…  Mr. Lankford told the panel his district has seen a lot of layoffs but even more disturbing were the amount of businesses cutting hours and migrating to a part time schedule for the bulk if not the entirety of its workforce.

Of course the panel, being in New York and not in the 5th district, felt they had a better handle on the situation on the ground in Oklahoma than the congressman, who was doing the interview from his district not Capital Hill.  They all but called him a liar, so deep is their denial of this law’s disastrous effects.  But that pesky Mr Lankford had to go all facty on them, naming businesses and showing stats and relaying personal stories he had heard all to prove what he and a lot of us already knew.

Conservatives got this one right.

The law sucks and the American middle class will bear the burden.  Oh didn’t I mention the other piece of the bill being delayed, the mandatory health care provision for corporations.  Meaning big businesses and corporations won’t have to provide coverage for all it’s employees yet.  Small business will still have to implement according to the mandate.  Seems that part of the bill has some problems and implementation is impossible for bigger businesses at the moment.  That bit about Pelosi saying pass it then we’ll figure it out, yeah not going so well.  Turns out losing the game and then working on your game plan just doesn’t get it done.

Denier-in-Chief

Denier-in-Chief WH Spokesman Jay Carney

But you know the apologists and deniers said we had been told this would be coming so it’s not, you know, like a news story or anything, just a, you know, plot to discredit the black President.

I would laugh if that last sentence weren’t the true belief of the liberals and progressives still clinging to the mantra this President can do no wrong, simply because he’s black.

News flash amigos, Presidents mess up, write bad laws, make dumb decisions regardless of their skin color.  All the white ones messed up and now the black one has too.  Saying so doesn’t make you a hater, it makes you an American.

I’m a liberal and this law is an insult to every President who has ever written a law, so yeah, all of them.

I’m also an American and my President messed up.
